Relive the 1958 ISU European Figure Skating Championships held in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. Elite senior-level figure skaters from European ISU member nations competed for the title of European Champion. This event was the first ISU competition to be internationally live broadcasted in the history of Figure Skating.

This footage includes views from the event and the opening ceremony as well as trainings of Alain Calmat (FRA), Karol Divin (CSR), Michael Booker (GBR).

 

 

It also includes the top 3 Pair Skaters with the bronze medallists, Joyce Coates / Anthony Holles (GBR), the Silver medallists, Nina Zhuk / Stanislav Zhuk (SU), and the winners of the Pair Skating event, Vera Suchankova / Zdenek Dolezal (CSR).

Joyce Coates and Anthony Holles finished tenth at the 1956 Olympic Winter Games, captured the bronze medal at the 1958 and 1959 European Figure Skating Championships, and came in fourth at the 1959 World Figure Skating Championships. They retired from competition before the 1960 season, turning professional to take up coaching.

Nina and Stanislav Zhuk, husband and wife, were the 1958-1960 European silver medallist. They placed 6th at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Stanislas Zhuk later went on to a long career as a coach. Among the pairs he coached were Olympic gold medallists Irina Rodnina and Alexander Zaitsev and Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov.

Vera Suchankova-Hamplova, with her skating partner Zdenek Dolezal, were the 1958 World silver medallist and two-time European champion (1957, 1958). They represented Czechoslovakia at the 1956 Winter Olympics and placed 8th.
