As the only lady to win two gold medals in Speed Skating at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Nana Takagi was crowned Queen of the Gangneung Oval. The older of the successful Takagi-sisters won the Mass Start gold, which made its Olympic debut in PyeongChang on February 24. Just three days before, she had won the Team Pursuit title together with sister Miho, Ayano Sato and Ayaka Kikuchi. “I was able to show that the Takagi family name is not just all about Miho but Nana, too. It was nice to achieve this in a new event,” she said after the Mass Start. Miho collected all colors in Korea, including 1500m silver and 1000m bronze.

Nao Kodaira was the first Japanese lady to ever win an Olympic title when she defeated home favorite Sang-Hwa Lee (KOR) in the 500m. She comforted the two-fold champion and friend, when the two skated a lap of honor together, holding up the Korean and the Japanese flags. “Sport can make the world one together, it’s simple," Kodaira explained. The 31-year-old Japanese sprinter also won silver in the 1000m.

Japan won a total of 13 medals at PyeongChang 2018. With their six Speed Skating medals, three gold, two silver and one bronze medal, the Japanese ladies won more silverware at PyeongChang 2018, than they had done in the entire Olympic Speed Skating history turning Japan into a force to be reckoned with.
