The 18-year-old maintained his grip on the distance this World Cup season, leaving Sjinkie Knegt (NED) and Kim Do Kyoum (KOR) to settle for silver and bronze respectively.

Dutch legend Knegt, who already has three medals from the Budapest and Dordrecht legs, was blindsided by Hwang.

“He surprised me. I wasn’t expecting him. I was trying to look forward to pass the number one and then he jumped in,” he said.

“It is what it is. I think tactically I did well. Too bad I finished second.”

Kim, meanwhile, is further proof of Korea’s deep talent pool, reaching his first World Cup podium after leading for much of this race.

“This is my first World Cup medal, so I feel proud. But I was still a little bit nervous,” he said.

The men's 1500m races have all been won by Korea so far. Dordrecht’s silver and bronze medallists, Liu Shaolin Sandor (HUN) and Charles Hamelin (CAN), did not qualify to the final.

Veteran Thibaut Fauconnet of France won the B final.
