Arianna Fontana (ITA) finally won her first gold medal in her fourth Olympic Winter Games, when she seized the ladies’ 500m gold. The 27-year-old Italian dominated the race from start to finish, sitting at the front and guarding her position all the way.

Fontana’s medal adds gold to her already impressive Olympic medal color palette, next to her silver from Sochi 2014 and four bronzes. "I'm speechless,” she said. “I crossed the line and I thought I was first and I looked at my coach and he (said), 'I don't know, but you did great. When I saw I was first, I was just yelling and started crying.”

After having won the 500m gold, Fontana also collected silver with the Italian Ladies’ 3000m Relay Team and individual bronze in the 1000m, adding up to a career total of eight Olympic medals. She equaled Victor An (KOR/RUS) and Apolo Anton Ohno (USA) for most medals in Short Track Speed Skating, and surpassed compatriot cross-country skier Manuela Di Centa for second-most medals won by an Italian athlete at the Olympic Winter Games.
