On March 22, 2018 the International Skating Union signed a proclamation of support and affinity for Special Olympics and all its Skaters whose extraordinary courage represents the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competition across 170 countries throughout the world for children and adults with intellectual disabilities; and throughout the world Special Olympics athletes offer inspiration to all citizens through their accomplishments and dedication; and the spirit of Special Olympics – skills, courage, acceptance and joy – transcends boundaries of geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, race or religion.


“The ISU is pleased to sign the proclamation of support and affinity for Special Olympics” said the ISU President Mr. Jan Dijkema “we look forward to our future collaboration and to determining in more detail how we will mutually contribute to the promotion of Figure Skating and Speed Skating”.


The document was signed by Mr. Jan Dijkema ISU President, Mr Alexander Lakernik ISU Vice President Figure Skating, Mr. Fredi Schmid ISU Director General, Mr. Maurizio Romiti, Special Olympics Italy Board Chairman and Dr. Mariusz Damentko Special Olympics Europe Eurasia Sports Director.
