Balance Beyond the Ice: The ISU Calm Zone Returns in Beijing

18 Sep 2025

After its successful debut at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Boston (USA) earlier this year, the “Calm Zone” initiative will now be part of the ISU Skate to Milano Qualifier event in Beijing (CHN). In Boston, skaters embraced this safe space as a welcome pause from the competition environment - a place to recharge, reconnect, and leave feeling lighter and more focused.

Competition mode on ice – Reset mode off ice

Commissioned by ISU President, Jae Youl Kim, and inspired by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) “Mind Zone” at the Olympic Village, the Calm Zone concept is built around a simple idea: in the middle of high-intensity events, athletes need moments of calm.

The space allows skaters to step away from the constant buzz of the rink, take a breath, and reset both mind and body. Equipped with mindfulness tools, fidget toys, sensory elements, and quiet corners for creativity, the Calm Zone is designed to support mental well-being in a way that feels intuitive and natural for skaters.

A space for connection and support

The Calm Zone is not just about recovery - it is also about solidarity. In Boston, skaters left encouraging notes for one another on the Kindness Wall, shared moments of encouragement, and sometimes even walked out together as new friends heading to dinner.

In Beijing, skaters will once again have the opportunity to drop by between training sessions, meals, or competition moments to find a sanctuary where they can release stress, regain energy, and restore confidence and clarity before returning to the ice.

Aligned with the ISU’s strong commitment to protecting athletes’ mental and emotional well-being, the Calm Zone is becoming a tradition - a pocket of peace at ISU events where skaters can reset, share encouragement, and return stronger.
