SAYES Project Featured in Sport and Citizenship Review

26 Feb 2025

The International Skating Union (ISU) announces the latest edition of the Sport and Citizenship Review[1] which features the European project SAYES (Safeguarding Young European Skaters), a pioneering initiative aimed at ensuring a safer environment for young Skaters.  Supported by the Erasmus+ Youth program, SAYES reflects a collective commitment to combat sexual violence and foster cultural change through education, collaboration, and innovative safeguarding tools.

The SAYES project brought together seven partners from four countries, including the ISU, ISU Members from France (FFSG), Hungary (Hunskate), and the Netherlands (KNSB), the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, and the association Colosse aux Pieds d’Argile. Jointly the consortium developed impactful resources, such as an eLearning module and awareness campaigns, to empower young skaters, coaches, and sports administrators with knowledge and prevention strategies.

ISU President Jae Youl Kim emphasized the importance of this initiative during his interview for this Review stating, “Skaters should be able to practice their sport in a safe and fair environment, which is why athlete safeguarding is one of the five pillars of the ISU Vision 2030.” He added, “The ISU wanted to learn from the SAYES project to share materials and guidance with other ISU Members outside Europe. The upcoming e-learning module will not only educate young skaters about their rights but also provide valuable insights for coaches, clubs, and federations.”

This recognition in the Sport and Citizenship Review underscores the importance of SAYES as a model for safeguarding efforts across the Ice Skating community. By addressing issues of abuse and raising awareness SAYES aims to inspire a transformation in the Ice Skating community.
