Synchro9 debuts at ISU Figure Skating World Championships 2026 in Prague

08 Apr 2026

Synchro9, the ISU’s new Synchronized Skating format, debuts in Prague - bringing a fast-paced, knockout-style evolution to Figure Skating.

Synchro9 lights Up Prague in landmark debut

A new chapter in Synchronized Skating began in Prague as Synchro9 made its official debut at the ISU Figure Skating World Championships 2026.

Inside the O2 Arena, more than 15,000 fans witnessed a high-energy Exhibition Gala that introduced a bold new vision for the sport - one designed for a new generation of audiences.

With millions watching worldwide, Synchro9 didn’t just arrive - it made an immediate impact.

A performance built for a new era

The demo team from Finland delivered the first-ever Synchro9 performance, combining speed, precision, and modern choreography with a strong entertainment edge.

With its sharper pacing and visual clarity, Synchro9 immediately signals a shift toward a more broadcast-ready skating format whilst blending athletic performance and style.

What makes Synchro9 different?

Synchro9 introduces a fresh take on Synchronized Skating competition, centred on speed, clarity, and audience engagement.

  • Nine skaters per team, compared to the traditional up to 16
  • Cleaner formations and greater visual impact
  • A format designed for broadcast and digital audiences

The reduced team size enhances visibility on the ice, allowing every movement and formation to land with greater precision and impact.

A new competition format: Head-to-Head and Knockout

One of the most distinctive features of Synchro9 will be its knockout-style competition format.

Teams will compete in:

  • Head-to-head battles
  • Elimination rounds
  • Themed performances

This structure transforms Synchronized Skating into a high-stakes, fast-paced experience - bringing new intensity and storytelling to the ice.

Driving global growth in Synchronized Skating

Beyond the spectacle, Synchro9 has been designed to support the global growth of Synchronized Skating.

With smaller teams required, more countries can participate and develop competitive programmes, lowering barriers to entry in a discipline traditionally dominated by larger teams.

Road to the Youth Olympic Games 2028

Synchro9 is already taking its next step on the international stage.

The format is set to feature at the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2028, marking a significant milestone and reinforcing its long-term ambition within the Olympic movement.
