The 2012 ISU European Figure Skating Championships continued in Sheffield, Great Britain, on Tuesday with the Preliminary Round for Ladies. The Preliminary Rounds take place before the official competition starts. In total 28 Ladies (18 Direct entries and 10 Preliminary Round entries) will compete in the Short Program on Friday.

Ladies, Preliminary Round

23 Ladies competed in the Preliminary Round and the top ten advanced to the Short Program. Russia's Polina Korobeynikova came first ahead of Joshi Helgesson of Sweden and Monika Simancikova of Slovakia.

Korobeynikova opened her routine to Otonal with a triple flip-triple toe followed by five more triples including a double Axel-triple toe combination. She scored a seasons best of 109.73 points. I was a little nervous but I tried not to think about this being the European Championships. For me this is just a competition like all the others. I am skating for myself and I want to please myself. I didn't think about watering down my program content. The qualifying round was a good opportunity to check on myself and it is an extra practice, the reigning Junior Grand Prix Final bronze medallist noted.

Skating to Romeo and Juliet Helgesson produced four clean triple jumps including two Lutzes and two level-four spins to earn 96.27 points. I feel really good about the first half of the program but the last half with the jumps was not so good. I don't know what went wrong. I'll do it better next time, the Swede commented.

Simancikova landed five triple jumps and collected 91.99 points. I feel good. I am so happy because this was my first clean free skate this season. I think I wasn't so nervous. I just wanted to to qualify. My goal for the competition was first to qualify for the short program and then I just want to qualify to do my free skate. I am happy because these are my first Europeans, the 16-year-old said.

French Champion Yretha Silete placed 4th at 90.38 points and Ukrainian Champion Natalia Popova was ranked fifth with 88.70 points.
