The ISU Council evaluated the potential options to replace the cancelled ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating, Yerevan (ARM) – September 21-24, 2022 (see ISU Statement of September 16).
The ISU Council has followed with concern the recent developments at the Armenian/Azerbaijan border and protests in Yerevan.
Further to the reports of fighting which has erupted between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops along the Armenia–Azerbaijan border, the ISU is closely monitoring the situation.
Nikolaj Memola (ITA) and Pair Skaters Cayla Smith/Andy Deng (USA) became the first Skaters to seal spots in the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final (Dec. 8-11, 2022) with their win at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Riga (LAT) (Sept. 7-10, 2022). ISU World Junior silver medallist Jia Shin (KOR) struck gold in the Women’s event while Darya Grimm/Michail Savitskiy (GER) topped the Ice Dance podium.
Speed Skating at top level is a balancing act in many ways. Relying on routine or trying something different is a dilemma once preparation for a new season gets underway. Switching from teams after for thirteen years, Jorrit Bergsma (NED) chose the latter. Antoinette de Jong (NED) did not change teams, but she had a change of routine too.
Figure Skating is the only Olympic sport that has such elaborate and diverse costumes. The costume is an important part of the performance to many and the designers work hard to make a costume beautiful, suitable for the Skater and the program plus comfortable so that it does not get into the way when athletes do quadruple jumps or acrobatic lifts.
Newcomers Mao Shimada (JPN), Nozomu Yoshioka (JPN) and Sophia Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev (USA) collected the gold medals at the second ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Ostrava (CZE) while Katerina Mrazkova/Daniel Mrazek won the first ISU Junior Grand Prix Ice Dance title for the Czech Republic.
Jens van ‘t Wout (NED) stands out on the Short Track ice. Not only because of the gold tooth he likes to show after skating well, but also because of his bravado and flair. Van ‘t Wout is one of Netherlands’ rising stars as the Dutch team aims to continue their climb to the very top of the sport.
Korean Ice Dancers Hannah Lim/Ye Quan claimed a historic first ISU Junior Grand Prix title in the discipline for their country, as the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series 2022/23 kicked off with the first event in Courchevel (FRA). Hana Yoshida and Shunsuke Nakamura continued Japan’s success in Single Skating after the country had sat out the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating in the past season.
The next generation of talented young Figure Skaters takes the stage as the Juniors traditionally start the season with the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series 2022/23.
Once the Skater and his team have chosen the idea for the program and the music, the work with the choreographer starts. A Figure Skating program is more than just a sequence of elements such as jumps and spins. Who wants to be successful needs a high quality program and has to combine the technical and artistic aspects of the sport.
Figure Skating is one of the few sports where music is a very important part of the performance. Therefore, finding the right music, arranging and designing it in a way that suits the athlete and the program perfectly is not always an easy task. The music selection is usually the first step in the process of making a new program.
Most Speed Skaters start the off-season with a well-deserved holiday, but they pick-up training by the end of April usually. Without ice, the skater’s routine mainly comprises cycling, inline-skating, dry-land exercises and the gym. And of course, there is summer ice too.
The ISU was informed by the Fédération Française des Sports de Glace (FFSG) of the cancellation of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating event that was scheduled to take place from September 28 to October 1, 2022 in Grenoble (FRA). The Council decided to reallocate the event to Gdansk (POL) following a spontaneous application.
