The ISU Junior World Cup Short Track Speed Skating takes place in Heerenveen, Netherlands, from February 17-18. This is the third Junior World Cup event of the season, after two editions in Leeuwarden (NED) before Christmas, building up to next week’s ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Gdansk (POL) from February 22-25.

“It's a world record, it's a gold medal, we obviously feel amazing,” said Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (CAN) with a big smile after he came off the ice a Team Sprint champion with teammates Anders Johnson and Laurent Dubreuil. The Canadian men followed the path of their female teammates, who also took gold in the Team Sprint on Thursday. Before the spectacular team events brought the first day of the ISU World Single Distances Championships to a close, Patrick Roest (NED) retained his 5000m title, beating long distance World Cup winner Davide Ghiotto (ITA).

“I really wanted this one, because I know I actually am the best. I can say that now, can’t I?” Irene Schouten (NED) indeed showed she is the best in the 3000m as the ISU World Single Distances Championships began on Thursday. Isabelle Weidemann (CAN) finished second and Martina Sáblíková (CZE) third. All three medalists had their own bumpy run-up to the tournament. In the women’s Team Sprint, Carolina Hiller, Maddison Pearman and Ivanie Blondin (CAN) won the first Canadian title of the championships on home ice in Calgary.

Almost everything Angel Daleman (NED) touched in Hachinohe City turned to gold last weekend at the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships. The 16-year-old Dutchwoman won all but two of the events in which she competed, seizing five individual golds and the Team Sprint title. The teenager also picked up a silver medal in the Team Pursuit. In the more-balanced Men’s competition, Sigurd Henriksen (NOR) won his third consecutive 5000m title.

With his parents in the stands at the Joynext Arena in Dresden, Germany on Sunday, the 23-year-old achieved one of the best results of his career as he won the men's 500m final in a thrilling finish.

After two months of voting, deliberations and much suspense, the day has come to finally reveal the winners of the ISU Skating Awards 2024. The “Most Valuable Skater” Award goes to Ilia Malinin (USA), Hana Yoshida (JPN) shines as “Best Newcomer”, Adam Siao Him Fa (FRA) stands out with the “Most Entertaining Program” while Loena Hendrickx (BEL) grabs the “Best Costume” prize. In the “Best Choreographer” and “Best Coach” categories, Benoît Richaud and Mie Hamada are respectively rewarded for their exceptional work. Brian Orser (CAN), two-time Olympic silver medalist as well as famous coach and choreographer, wins the “Lifetime Achievement” award honoring his career. Deanna Stellato-Dudek (CAN) earns the “Special Achievement” Award for her remarkable comeback into competition after a 16-years retirement.

Jordan Stolz (USA) and Angel Daleman (NED) dominated last season’s ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships, each winning four individual gold medals. Stolz went on to win three World Single Distance titles at senior level the following month. And while the 19-year-old American is no longer eligible for the junior championships, Daleman, at 16, is. The Dutchwoman has three more chances for World Junior Championship glory, the first of which is this weekend in Hachinohe City, Japan.

Metoděj Jílek (CZE) and Meike Veen (NED) have been crowned the winners of this season’s ISU Junior World Cup Speed Skating series. The 17-year-old Czech and the 19-year-old Dutchwoman both won two individual gold medals to seize the overall World Cup Trophies on the third and final weekend of the series in Hachinohe (JPN). With four overall trophies, the Netherlands topped the nations ranking.
