The ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating Series 2016/17 concluded today with the Ladies and Men 500 m, second 1500 m and Relay Finals. A One-two finish for Kazakhstan in the Men’s 500 m final. Yutong Han (CHN) and Yong Jin Liu (KOR) with their respective 1000 m (2) final. Russia (Ladies) and Netherlands (Men) take gold in the Relay events.

America’s Heather Bergsma won her second World Title at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships, when she edged out Ireen Wüst (NED) for gold in the ladies’ 1500m on Sunday. Almost at the end of the Championships, Bo-Reum Kim delighted the home crowd with the first Korean title of the tournament, winning the Ladies’ Mass Start.

Martina Sáblíková won her ninth consecutive 5000m title on day 3 of the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships. Kjeld Nuis took his maiden World Title in the Men’s 1000m, and Heather Bergsma took gold in the ladies’ 1000m. Sven Kramer closed the day with gold in the 10,000m.

The ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating Series 2016/17 resumed today with the sixth and final round in Minsk, Belarus. The racing events today included the following: Ladies and Men’s 1000 m (1) and 1500 m finals, and the relay semi-finals. Yang Liu (CHN) and Dae Hwang Heon (KOR) win the first 1000 m of the weekend. Double 1500 m gold for Korea: Ah Rum Noh (Ladies) and Hyo Benn Lee (Men)

Japan’s Nao Kodaira won the Ladies’ 500m to become the first Japanese female skater taking individual gold in the history of the World Single Distance Championships. Dutch Jan Smeekens grabbed a long awaited gold in the Men’s 500m and the Netherlands won both the Ladies’ and the Men’s Team Pursuit events at day 2 of the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships.

Ireen Wüst has won the inaugural race at the Gangneung Olympic Oval. With exactly one year to go to the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games, the Dutchwoman took gold in the Ladies’ 3000m at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships. Sven Kramer won his eighth 5000m World Title, with bronze Peter Michael taking the first ever World Speed Skating Championships medal for New-Zealand.

Top sport life has not always been easy for Polish Natalia Czerwonka. The 28-year-old silver 2014 Olympic medalist suffered a head injury and a broken vertebra after a collision with a tractor, while training on the bike in August 2014. We took the opportunity to talk to her in Heerenveen last December. Her passion for speed skating is still unbroken.

The racing events today included the following: Ladies and Men’s 1000 m and 1500 m (1) finals, and the relay semi-finals. Marianne St-Gelais (CAN) and Thibaut Fauconnet (FRA) win the 1000 m while Canada claims double gold in the 1500 m (1) with Kim Boutin (Ladies) and Charles Hamelin (Men).

Javier Fernandez of Spain struck gold and claimed his fifth consecutive title at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships. Russia’s Maxim Kovtun and Mikhail Kolyada picked up the silver and bronze medals.

The ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2017 concluded today with the crowning of this year’s individual and team champions. Yu Bin Lee (KOR) was crowned the Lady World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Champion for 2017. Meanwhile, Shaoang Liu (HUN) became the World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Champion for 2017. In the team events, the Ladies World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Relay Champions for 2017 are China who successfully defended their title, while Korea became the World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Relay Champions for 2017.

Dutch Ireen Wüst beat Czech arch rival Martina Sáblíková in the Ladies 3000m on day 3 of the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in Berlin on Sunday. Ruslan Murashov (RUS) won the men’s 500m, America’s Heather Bergsma collected her second 1000m gold of the weekend, and Dutch Kai Verbij grabbed his maiden individual World Cup gold in the men’s 1000m.

Peter Michael beat Jorrit Bergsma in the Men’s 5000m but Ted-Jan Bloemen claimed gold in the distance on day 2 of the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in Berlin. Nao Kodaira collected her second 500m gold, Kjeld Nuis won the Men’s 1000m and Ireen Wüst the Ladies’ 1500m.
