It’s already been a World Championship debut to remember for South Korea’s Hwang Dae Heon after the 18-year-old won gold in the men’s 500 metres on Saturday.

He kept a tight rein on China’s Ren Ziwei throughout the A Final, sitting on his shoulder in second place until the final lap, then gliding ahead on the outside to leave the pack in his wake.

“I feel very good and proud,” he said. “But since there are still other events, I’m happy but also focused on those to come.”

Stuck in fourth place right up until the final turn, Semen Elistratov (RUS) won his second bronze of the day with a sharp push at the end to edge out another Chinese athlete, Xu Hongzhi, by 0.020 seconds.

Charles Hamelin (CAN), a gold-medal winner earlier in the 1500 metres, won the B Final.
