South Korea claimed a fourth gold of the World Short Track Championships as Shim Suk Hee won the Ladies’ 1000m to finish on top of the podium in the first event of the second and final day of competition in Montreal, Canada.

It was the sixth overall medal of the weekend for Korea’s Short Track team and Shim’s second after she won silver in the 1500m event on Saturday. It was also Shim’s second World Championship title over 1000m in Montreal, where she was also victorious in 2014. "I'm comfortable in this city," she said, "because I got first place in the past. I have a good memory and I'm happy to get a good result again."

Russia’s Sofia Prosvirnova continued her strong showing at the Maurice-Richard Arena with a second-place finish, mere ticks behind Shim and nearly three-tenths of a second ahead of bronze medalist Li Jinyu (CHN).

It’s Prosvirnova’s first World Championship medal in the event and just her second medal over this distance, having earned gold at the 2017 European Championships.

"I just went out on the ice and tried my best," she said. "I was surprised because my best distance is 500, I'm a sprinter, and I didn't really race well in that. But I'm happy about my 1000.

"The victories always give me more confidence and motivation to work hard for next year. If you don’t get the result, you might not have the motivation. It was a really good way to finish the season."
