Kim Min Sun (KOR) continued her 500m winning streak with a third consecutive gold in the ISU World Cup in Calgary on Friday. Ragne Wiklund (NOR) took the ranking lead in the women’s 3000m, winning her second gold this season, ahead of Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong (NED) and Marijke Groenewoud (NED).

Wesly Dijs (NED) won the 1500m in Calgary for his career-first World Cup medal, while Connor Howe (CAN) came sixth to retain his lead in the ranking, before his team came second in the men’s Team Pursuit behind USA.

After two autumn competitions in Stavanger (NOR) and Heerenveen (NED) in November, the ISU World Cup Speed Skating Series goes into full winter mode with back-to-back events in Calgary on December 9-11 and 16-18, 2022. Outdoor temperatures dip far below zero, but the ice under the roof of the Olympic Oval will be fast. Being the only track at altitude which the Skaters attend this international season, all eyes will be on the record boards.

Tim Prins (NED) was in a league of his own at the second ISU Junior World Cup event in Seinäjoki (FIN) last weekend. Prins spearheaded the unstoppable Dutch, who won ten out of twelve disciplines in the Junior ranks, but he crashed in the Team Pursuit. Norway led the medal table in the Neo-Senior ranks with three gold medals. Spain also won three golds, but Norway also collected 5 silvers and 5 bronzes, while the Spanish only added one bronze.

Laurent Dubreuil (CAN) took his third gold medal at the ISU Four Continents Championships in Quebec City, but not without a little hiccup. In Sunday’s 1000m, the Olympic silver medalist needed to overcome a near-collision with pair-mate Conor McDermott-Mostowy (USA) at the first backstretch to bring home the title.

Min Sun Kim (KOR) won her second gold of the Four Continents Speed Skating Championships on Sunday, adding the 1000m title to her 500m crown. But Valérie Maltais (CAN) went one better - the 32-year-old anchored her younger teammates Béatrice Lamarche and Maddison Pearman to gold in the Team Pursuit on the final day, having already won the 3000m and the Mass Start.

Kazakhstan’s women have big plans in speed skating. At the ISU Four Continents Championships in Quebec City on Saturday, Nadezhda Morozova and Yekaterina Aydova won gold and silver in the 1500m, and together with junior Alina Dauranova plan to skate the World Cup Team Pursuit in Calgary next week.

The world champion and Olympic silver medalist lives in Quebec and the first international tournament at the Centre de Glaces provided him with an opportunity to have his grandparents watch him from the tribune.

Min Sun Kim (KOR) started the tournament with her second title in the 500m, and China concluded the action-packed first day at the Centre de Glaces with gold in the Women’s Team Sprint.

Quebec will host the third ISU Four Continents Championships in the history of Speed Skating on December 2-4, 2022. It’s the first ISU event at the brand new Centre de Glaces, since the Gaétan Boucher Oval was covered up with a roof last year. It provides 500m World Cup leader Laurent Dubreuil (CAN) with a first opportunity to win a major title on home ice, while Mass Start World Champion Joey Mantia (USA) will make his first international appearance this season.

The ISU and Planet Ice share a common commitment to create initiatives and experiences aiming at expanding Ice Skating sports to the large public. It was cold and windy at the Jääurheilukeskus outdoor Speed Skating track in Finland, but the future stars of Speed Skating defied the tough conditions at the first of three Junior World Cup events of this season. Jade Groenewoud (NED), Alina Dauranova (KAZ) and Issa Gunji (JPN) were the most decorated Skaters with two gold medals each in the Junior category, while Anna Ostlender (GER), Kasper Tveter (NOR) and Nil Llop Izquierdo (ESP) seized two victories each in the Neo-Senior category.
