"A relief," said Patrick Roest (NED) after he won his third consecutive World Allround title at the Combined ISU World Sprint/Allround Championships in Hamar, Norway on Sunday. The 24-year-old Dutchman bounced back from a poor outing at the World Single Distance Championships two weeks ago in Salt Lake City, winning three of four distances on his way to the Allround title at the Vikingskipet.

Ireen Wüst (NED) won her seventh World Allround title at the Combined ISU World Sprint/Allround Championships in Hamar, Norway on Sunday. The 33-year-old is now only one Allround title short of record-holder Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann (GER).

After Miho Takagi (JPN) had won the ladies' ISU World Sprint title, Tatsuya Shinhama (JPN) followed his compatriot's footsteps taking the men's in Hamar on Saturday. The 23-year-old sprinter was the first male skater from Japan to win the title since Akira Kuroiwa in 1987, and Japan is the first country to take both the men's and ladies' sprint titles in the same year since Korea's Lee Kyou-hyuk and Lee Sang-hwa in 2010.

On February 26, 2020 the ISU announced that the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2020 cannot be staged as originally foreseen on March 13-15, 2020 since, in light of the situation in South Korea, the competent authorities of the city of Seoul have closed the Mokdong Ice Rink and ordered the cancellation of all planned competitions.

 Miho Takagi (JPN) had a formidable start to the ISU World Sprint Championships in Hamar, Norway, on Friday. Last year's runner-up won both the 500m and the 1000m, to open up a gap of 0.87 seconds over defending champion Nao Kodaira (JPN) in the second 500m race on Saturday.

The World’s next generation of Figure Skaters will find out who is the best of the best at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2020 in Tallinn, Estonia (March 2 - 8). Tallinn has hosted the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships once before in 2015, and has hosted the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in 2010 as well as the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating events.

The famous Hamar Vikingskipet, home of the 1994 Olympic Speed Skating, will host the first combined ISU World Sprint & World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Speed Skating history this weekend. Previously the Allround and Sprint Championships were held separately. Last year Patrick Roest (NED) and Martina Sáblíková (CZE) won the ISU World Allround Speed Skating titles in Calgary, while Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) and Nao Kodaira (JPN) took the ISU World Sprint Speed Skating titles in Heerenveen. All four champions will be present in Hamar to defend their titles. The Sprint Championships are on Friday and Saturday and the Allround tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.

For Keegan Messing, one of his happiest days and one of his saddest days in his life were just a few weeks apart. On August 3, the Canadian skater married his long-time girlfriend Lane Hodson in his home in Alaska. On September 22, he lost his beloved younger brother Paxon. Paxon, 26, died in a motorcycle accident in Alaska. He left a wife and three young children behind.

Femke Kok and Robin Groot led a Dutch golden sweep across all seven Ladies' events at the ISU Junior World Speed Skating Championships in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland, last weekend. Kok won the 500m, the 1000m and retained the Allround title, while Groot collected the 1500m, 3000m and Mass Start gold. Groot also played a part in the Team Pursuit victory, while Kok was instrumental in both the Team Pursuit and the Team Sprint gold.
