Steven Dubois knows that as an elite sportsman he has had it better than most during the COVID-19 pandemic but that has not stopped the past 12 months posing huge challenges.

He’s been around in international Speed Skating for ten years, but the best is yet to come for Laurent Dubreuil. Last January the Canadian followed the footsteps of his legendary countryman Jeremy Wotherspoon, winning 500m gold at the ISU World Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen. Although both his parents were Olympic Speed Skaters, Dubreuil’s choice of sports was his own. “To me, nothing was as much fun as Speed Skating,” he says.

After having caught the COVID-19 virus twice, Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) didn’t know what to expect during the 2020/21 season. Taking home one gold [1000m] and two silver medals [Overall and relay] from the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Dordrecht showed an exceptional recovery for Shaolin, who tested positive for the coronavirus back in September and November 2020.

A new edition of the epic duel between two-time Olympic and ISU World Figure Skating Champion Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN) and two-time ISU World Figure Skating Champion Nathan Chen (USA) highlights the Men’s event at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm (SWE). However, several strong contenders are prepared to enter the battle of the quad kings.

With four-time ISU World Figure Skating Ice Dance Champions Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron (FRA) sitting out the Championships this year, the Ice Dancers will crown new World Champions in Stockholm (SWE). Competition will be close and exciting with several top teams in the mix.

Pair Skating power houses China and “FSR” are poised to compete for the podium spots at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm (SWE). However, the deep field of 28 couples – a rarely seen high number - includes also strong teams from Canada, the USA and Europe.

After two successful international Short Track Speed Skating events, the 2020/21 season officially came to an end on the final day of the ISU World Short Track Championships in Dordrecht (NED) on March 7, 2021.

The ISU World Figure Skating Championships are the most prestigious event in the ISU calendar each season and they are full of highlights. That does not come as a surprise as the Skaters are aiming to be at the peak of their form at the pinnacle of the season. When Joel Dufter (GER) crashed in the 500m at ISU World Cup Speed Skating races in Heerenveen in January, he put the track markers back in place before getting up again. “I crashed in the corner and it was a mess. I thought it was the right thing to do,” he laughs. It says a lot about his character.

Suzanne Schulting has taken her ice skating from the frozen Dutch canals to the absolute top of the world, making the Short Track Speed Skating circuit her home away from home.
