Brendan Corey (AUS) is a man on a mission – to put Australian Short Track back on the map.

At the Nederlandse Loterij 2024 ISU World Short Track Championships, he helped do just that, taking a brilliant bronze in the 1500m.

It was his country’s first medal at an ISU World Short Track Championships for 20 years, and its first individual podium since Steven Bradbury (AUS) in 1981.

“I still feel like I’m dreaming,” he reflected on the race. “I went all out until the end. That’s what Short Track is all about, crazy racing and who can do it on the day.

“It’s an incredible feeling knowing it is almost as long as I’ve been alive that we last won a World Championship medal.

“My mum and dad were up until 4am in Australia to watch the medal ceremony live, and that means a lot to me. They were overjoyed.”

Corey’s improvements have been aided by an ISU Development Scholarship.

“Two seasons ago I got the scholarship and that helped support me to go and train in the USA,” he said.

“It’s good that the ISU can help support the smaller skating nations. It was a great experience being on the ice every day with elite level skaters and the world class coaching staff they have there. It helped me improve significantly.”
