Coaches and athletes are in firm agreement: challenges remain but USA Short Track Speed Skating is “definitely on the up again”.

“I think I can be an example now, that it's possible to combine both ice skating and inline skating,” says Felix Rijhnen. A twofold world champion on inline skates, the 32-year-old German seized his first World Cup win on the ice in the Mass Start at the first ISU World Cup Speed Skating event of the 2022/23 season in Stavanger (NOR). Rijhnen is hungry for more success on the ice, especially in the 5000m, his favorite distance.

They say the best should be saved for last and for Denis Nikisha (KAZ) it all came true in Almaty on the closing day of the fourth ISU World Cup event of the season. Nikisha marked his sensational victory in the 500m (2) with a proposal on the ice, and his girlfriend said yes.

Having previously claimed silver and bronze on the Calgary Olympic Oval, Davide Ghiotto (ITA) completed the set with his first World Cup win in the 10,000m on the same ice ahead of favorite Patrick Roest.

After skating the 5000m on Friday, Miho Takagi (JPN) was back in her comfort zone on Saturday. The Japanese world record holder took her third gold in four races this season at the fourth leg of the ISU World Cup series in Calgary.

Suzanne Schulting (NED) let out a scream of delight as she won the 500m (1) in Almaty’s Halyk Arena on Saturday but Natalia Maliszewska was just as happy with silver; even happier perhaps, the Polish sprint specialist revealed after the race.

Diane Sellier (POL) was on the brink of giving up on Short Track two years ago but an invitation from his coach Gregory Durand to leave France for Poland helped to change his mind. His leap of faith got rewarded on Saturday as the 21-year-old secured the first Senior gold medal of his career. 

Irene Schouten (NED) bounced back from a poor outing in the 3000m last week to win the only 5000m race of this World Cup season on Friday in Calgary (CAN), while the dominant Kim Min Sun (KOR) took her fourth 500m gold of the season.

Kjeld Nuis (NED) finally managed to live up to his billing as Olympic 1500m champion by winning his first World Cup race of the season at the same distance in Calgary (CAN) on Friday. He later added a silver medal in the Team Sprint, Poland taking the gold by just 0.03s.

On December 4, 2022, the International Skating Union (ISU) together with a variety of partners, national federations and skating clubs from all over the globe celebrated the first ever World Ice Skating Day (WISD). This inaugural edition was a success with events organized in 47 countries and at 170 ice rinks worldwide. By reuniting thousands of skaters of different levels, ages and social backgrounds, the ISU has achieved the major goal that underline this initiative: making equal access, diversity and inclusion a reality in the ice skating community – a trend to be set not only over a single day but for the years ahead.

The ISU World Cup Short Track circuit is ready to hit the ice in Almaty (KAZ) again for the second installment of an Asian double-header. This fourth World Cup event of the season, taking place December 16-18, 2022, will surely produce more memorable moments.
