It was the chronicle of a record foretold. Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) broke the 34 second barrier, when he set a new world record in 33.98 in the 500m on Friday. Hong Zhang (CHN) grabbed the ladies’ 500m gold in a new Chinese national record on the first day of the ISU World Cup in Salt Lake City.

Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) broke the 500m world record on the final day of the ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Calgary and set a mark of 34.00. Brittany Bowe (USA) skated a 1500m world record on the superfast ice of the Canadian Olympic Oval on Sunday: 1:51.59.

The American ladies still sovereignly rule the 1000m. Brittany Bowe (USA) powered to a new world record in 1:12.54 on day 2 of the ISU World Cup in Calgary, but she didn’t win. Heather Richardson-Bergsma (USA) answered with 1:12.51 to grab gold in the next pair. Gerben Jorritsma (NED) surprisingly won the Men’s 1000m in 1:07.20.

Would the Russian youngster be able to beat the 34 second barrier in the Men’s 500m on the first day of the first World Cup event of the 2015/2016 season? He wasn’t, but Kulizhnikov sure set a mark when he destroyed the field with a Russian national record in 34.11.

Heather Richardson (USA) and Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) won the Grand World Cup and the 20,000 dollars that came with it, in the Final in Erfurt, Germany. Kulizhnikov did not have to race, as his victory had become clear on Saturday.

Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) secured this season’s World Cup in both the 500m and the 1000m at the ISU Word Cup Final in the Gunda-Niemann-Stirnemann-Halle Erfurt on Friday. Jorrit Bergsma (NED) won the World Cup for the combined 5000 and 10,000m. Marrit Leenstra (NED) secured the 1500m World Cup.

Sven Kramer (NED) laid a solid foundation to win a seventh title at the ISU World Allround Championships at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, Canada, on Saturday. The Dutchman took the lead after a tenth place in the 500m and a strong win in the 5000m. Title defender Koen Verweij (NED) crashed out of the tournament at the start of the 500m and Denis Yuskov (RUS) is Kramer’s main rival, he has to make up only 0.17 seconds on Kramer in the 1500m on Sunday to take the lead. Heather Richardson (USA) leads the Ladies’ field after two distances on the first day. She took a big lead with a superb 500m and managed to stay ahead of Martina Sáblíková (CZE) and Ireen Wüst (NED) in a hard-fought 3000m.

The first ISU World Development Trophy 2015 was scheduled to take place in Zakopane, however because of a technical failure of the ice skating rink the event was transferred to Warsaw. More than 25 youth skaters from six countries (CZE, EST, HUN, LAT, POL and SVK) took part in the second ISU World Development Trophy in Speed Skating in Warsaw, Poland.
